The people in the community live in the same houses and they have the same schedules of life. They don't get to do whatever they want. The people aren't allowed to have their own families, so they get assigned a spouse and kids.

They get the same amount of food, clothes, and they have the same number of kids. Every day they have to go through the same things and they don't have secrets. In the mornings they have to share what their dreams were and at dinner they have to share their feelings.

They have the same birthdays that are called ceremonies. Children in the years 1 through 12 have ceremonies. When they reach 12 years the elders choose a job for them and they start training for adulthood.

The people in the community don't have feelings. They don't feel pain or happiness. They don't even love their children. They don't get to feel any kinds of emotions.

Jonas starts having feelings for Fiona but they make him drink medicine that will stop those feelings. When someone in the community starts having feelings they call it stirrings. They assign medicine that stops them from dreaming about it and feeling anything.
They don't know anything about their past and there is one person who keeps all of the memories and that is the Receiver. They don't know about things like war and they don't have holidays like Christmas.
