  • Cuban Missile Crisis
  • H-bomb testing on Eniwetok caused a 25-square mile fireball, and caused massive radioactive waste. This showed the power of any nation who wields nuclear weapons.
  • Sputnik's launch was unexpected by the Americans. Eisenhower responded by tasking the Air Force with research about space engineering.

  • Warsaw pact formed by what was left of the Soviet countries and they housed missiles in Cuba to target U.S, cities. Thus, the Cuban Missile Crisis began in 1962. The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty stopped above=ground testing for both parties.  Shows fear of retaliation from both countries.

  • This stopped above-ground nuclear testing between the USSR and US.
  • Founded by Stalin, directed the creation and launch of Sputnik. Also first started to work on space stations Mir (Peace) and Salyut. Sergey Korolev was looking over these operations. 
  • ICBM which was successful in launching warheads and sending satellites into orbit. If it were focused upon, it would have guaranteed success in the Space Race. It wasn't used to reduce tensions between the two countries.
  • Provides educational assistance to those who cannot afford so in scientific fields of study. This was important after Eisenhower declared a state of national emergency.
