This story takes place on the coast of North Carolina in the early 1900's. Where the narrator and his 3 other family members live (mom, dad, and Aunt Nicey).
A baby is born and it turns out he has disabilities. William(Doodle) is expected to die young and doesn't live up to what the narrator wanted in a brother.
Through the pride the narrator has he teaches Doodle how to walk. While they were eating dinner a scarlet ibis lands in a tree then falls and dies.
On the final day of training Doodle and the narrator realize that Doodle will not be able how to swim or climb. While on the walk home there is a storm that appears. The narrator runs but Doodle can't keep up.
Eventually the narrator stops to wait on Doodle and after a few minutes of waiting he realizes Doodle won't show up. So he goes out to find him but sees him dead under a bush.
On the walk home the narrator realizes his pride killed his brother.
