  • Rising Action, Dramatic Irony, Antagonist/Protagonist
  • Your house is so creepy. It would be the perfect place to kill somebody
  • What's he planning??
  • Let's sip some wine, friend.
  • One quiet night in Italy, two colleagues are standing outside a winery, talking about wine and laughing.
  • Climax, Situational Irony, External Conflict (Character vs. Character)
  • You TRAITOR!!
  • My name is Fortunato, and this is my story. Me and Montresor are colleagues, even good friends, who work in a winery because of our fascination with wine. However, the owner is planning on selling the winery, meaning that me or Montresor will be able to buy it. Montresor, coming from a rich family, will easily be able to pay more than me if I tried. I, however, will need to take out a loan and go into debt to afford it, and my family cannot help me with any funds.
  • Falling Action, Verbal Irony
  • I wasn't trying to kill you! It was for the wine!
  • Montresor has offered to drink some wine in the catacombs below his house, the perfect place to hide a body! We arrived at the entrance, where Montresor offered me some wine so that I would relax and be true. In order to seem normal, I drank with him as we walked. As long as I don’t get too drunk and can execute my plan, Montresor is as good as dead.
  • Denouement/Theme
  • Talk all you want, you will rot in here like you deserve!
  • Why did I feel such greed?
  • We continued to sip wine until we reached a dark room at the end of the tunnel. Then, Montresor stopped for a moment and told me to enter the small room to our right, as it gave the most pure taste. I agreed, and Montresor followed. Now, I reached into my back pocket to grab my knife, preparing myself to kill him. However, it was not there, at least I thought so. Time seemed to skip, moving in a blur until I found myself shackled, unable to move my arms.
  • What is this? Why am I locked up?
  • I tried to act innocent, pleading to Montresor to let me out. However, he was filled with disgust, and grabbed a trowel to fill the wall in. I begged Montresor to tell me why I was locked up. Montresor was trying to negotiate giving me a loan to co-own the winery, but found that I would kill him after seeing my knife. He gave me wine in order to make me too drunk to fight back. Then, he lead me into a designated room to give me the same pain he would feel, and it worked.
  • I try to have a nice conversation and help you buy the winery, and you bring a knife?!!
  • If only I didn’t feel such greed and talked to Montresor. He wanted the best for me, and all I saw was greed. Killing him was never the right decision, he was my best friend and now I must die for my mistakes.
