Hello, we are the Nez Perce. I am Chief Joseph. Our home started in Northwestern USA, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. We ended up back in Idaho just not at the home we started at and you will learn why soon.
The Nez Perce went through a lot of hardships. The white settlers moved into our land and if we didn't leave, they threatened to kill us. In the late 1800s, the white settlers came to our land and told us in 1855 we could come back to our land, but when the time came to go home they soon learned that the white settlers hadn't left. Eventually I knew after we couldn't go home. so i had to make a speech and I tell the U.S. government that we surrender. There was no other choice.
We were affected by the USA. We were forced out by the US government. They found gold In our land and they never left.
There are many interesting and important facts that you should know. I will tell three important facts. Did you know that we lived in small villages near streams. Our name came from french trappers which means pierced nose. There were around 12,000 Nez Perce, but in 1805 but the numbers were decreased to less than 2000 by the 1900s.
We moved away from our home because we had a negative relationship with the white settlers.
People still ask questions about the Nez Perce and here are a couple of things I am still wondering. I wonder if They stayed with Lewis and Clark It would help Lewis and Clark's Journey. Another one is why couldn't get the white settlers give the Nez Perces a chance? I bet that Chief Joseph doesn't even no that one!
