Mr. Utterson and Mr Enfield are on their normal weekly walks together. Mr. Enfield recalls a memory of being near a similar dreary building and tells Mr. Utterson the story.
It was nighttime while this happened. Mr. Enfield was on a stroll and he happened to see two small figures. He describes what had happened to these two people to Mr. Utterson.
"Well, sir, the two ran into one another naturally enough at the corner; and then came the horrible part of the things; for the man trampled calmly over the, the child's body and left her screaming on the ground." (pg. 6)
