  • The real food is God.
  • " She stood looking up at the open window from where the playing came, even after the music stopped. Then a face came to the window. It was a young man's face." p.54

  • " The sun is beginning to shine for us. After all our black years, we lived to see our own brought store in America." p.116
  • From the start of the book to the end, Reb Smolinsky always had spent a lot of his time during the day and night studying the Torah and other religious things. Sara saw her farther looking at her mother after he told mother that the real food is God. The look that father gave mother was showing light. The daughters and mother seem to see light that shines on father's face when he uses words from the holy book.
  • "Father's face became alive with light." p.125
  • When all other human help is gone, then God himself steps out of his High Heaven, to help us.
  • Mashah spends her work money to make her look pretty, rather than helping out much with her family. This shows that Mashah brings beauty into the world, by the way she makes herself look. In chapter four she meets a guy named Jacob Novak at the corner of the street playing music and falls in love with him. After all Jacob brings light to her face and she doesn't have to worry so much on how she looks since she found the love of her life. Jacob bringing light to her makes he more than happy.

  • Fatther bought the shop and light started to come in between the family. Mother and father thought that they were going to be actually "people" now since they will be making more money. This shows that light started to shine in for the family. They had the thought that they were going to be successfully.
  • " I could hardly wait till we got out of the room to tell Hugo about Father." p.296
  • Father and mother get upset because the store they just bought they got robbed by buying it. They don't have any money left over. As mother yells at father, father seeks light and explains to her about the Bible to make her calm down. For an example, fathers point that he tries to come across is that when fail God is there and that's his path of light.
  • Both of Sara's sisters comes over to visit her when she decides to take off from her farther and mother.. Fania tells Sara she needs to move with her to become more successful, but Sara refuses. Sara wants to keep chasing her dream of being an independent person, and to reach her career. This brings beauty in the world of dreaming and chasing after what you want, as Sara is doing. Throughout the nook she brings light to herself and doesn't give up.

  • Throughout the book Sara seems to have trouble with the men that her father wants her to date to become more successful. Here is her being happy about showing off Hugo to her father. She starts to see beauty in the world as she found Hugo.
