This is the Aral sea before it started to go empty.
A man named Stalin decided to have a cotton field in a very arid area. Cotton needs a lot of water though so they made man made canals to supply the cotton. The water was coming from two of the major rivers that originally went into the Aral Sea
After the trenches were made the sea started going down.
When the cotton was ready to be harvested everyone in the community had to help.
A salt storm happened killing many animals and people in the process.
The Aral sea will not be filled for many decades.
