Jeannette feels that she is failing Maureen. She knew that her parents wouldn’t get Maureen any gifts for her birthday, so the children decided to be mature about their situation. They gathered all their money and bought Maureen kitchen toys and a laundry set, they figured that Maureen could pretend to have clean clothes and regular meals. As Maureen aged, Rex and Rose Mary realized that many of her friends were pentecostals and they wanted to take action to help Maureen in her situation. Maureen became very serious about her beliefs as she got baptized more then once and would come home exclaiming how she was born again. Rose Mary insisted they supported and respect the odd decisions of Maureen. That summer, Mary then went on to renew her teaching certification in Charleston for 8 weeks, and Lori left for summer camp. Rose left Maureen and Brian in the hands of Jeannette with 200 dollars worth of spending purposes. Jeannette worked out a budget for every week and soon after her father kept on asking her for money to pay for his beer and cigarettes. Later on he asked Jeannette again for twenty-five dollars, then begging again for twenty for the car he had borrowed. Rex insisted he would pay her back and also saying “I need money to make money” (Walls 210). To earn back the money, Rex insists that Jeannette comes with him to a roadside bar where he swindles a man named Robbie in pool using Jeannette as a distraction. Robbie began to flirt with Jeannette as he danced with her a couple times and pulled her in close. “That arm made me tense but not entirely unhappy” (Walls 211). The next evening Rex disappeared, Jeannettes babysitting income and the money her Mom gave her wasn’t lasting so she got a job at a fancy Jewelry store to make up for it. There was some times where Jeannette had the desire to steal some jewelry when Mr. Becker was out for lunch, but she would deeply regret her decisions afterward.
She needs a special birthday celebration, she at least should live a normal life.
Jeannette can you lend your father five dollars? Its only for beer and cigarettes and you know I will pay you back.
Jeannette feels like she is failing Maureen, she knew that her parents wouldn't get Maureen any gifts for her birthday.
Couple days later...
Rose Mary went to take College courses in Charleston for 8 weeks, She left Maureen and Brian in the hands of Jeannette with 200 dollars worth of spending purposes.
The name is Robbie. Wanna dance?
Rex started asking Jeannette for money, which got her off her budget. He said he would pay her back because he had never let her down before.
I have no idea.
Jeannette gave her father the money. And the twenty and twenty-five he asked for days later.
Honey, I need more money to get gas for the car I borrowed to get to a big meeting. I need money to make money.
To pay Jeannette back, Rex had to go to a roadside bar to play pool. And he insisted for Jeannette to come as well. His plan was to us her as a distraction to win against his player, Robbie. Which worked.
They danced for a bit as Jeannette was held close to Robbie which she found she was tense but not unhappy.
Well I got a job at the jewelry store. We need money somehow.
It was the next evening and Jeannette's father had disappeared. Jeannette knew that her babysitting money and what her mom gave her was not lasting so she had to get a job, at a jewelry store.
