  • Good morning from 7 news, my name is Jeanine Ramirez and we are in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Today we will be discussing the impacts of gentrification
  • As you can see, this is a picture taken 20 years ago of the exact location of where I am standing. It has changed so much for the better but gentrification has also caused many difficulties for locals.
  • Hi Jeanine, the gentrification has certainly changed this town and the locals, i for one, can say that I have had a hard time coping with the sudden change as i was kicked out of my home and I am still struggling financially.
  • Hi Ben, you are a local here. What have the gentrification changes done to your town, do you think the changes are positive or negative?
  • The things i love about this improved town are, Brooklyn has become much more modern and has opened many new shops, which opens up more job opportunities and attracts many tourists so us locals can meet new people.
  • Thank you so much Ben for speaking to us. They are some great thoughts. Although there are clear and obvious negative impacts on locals in Brooklyn, there are also positives that come with gentrification. Here we have Laura
  • It is evident that residents have not had a say in the changes that have been made to their home and neighbourhood. To gain more rights and have a say in Williamsburg’s gentrification, sign the petition on the Channel 7 website.
