Burke was no stranger to struggle. He grew up without parents, never attended school and never learned to read and wright. And on top of all that, he was deaf.
At the age of 16 Burke wandered into the bar known as the spotted dog, there he met a veteran prize fighter named Joe Parrish. Parish became Burke's coach and taught him how to prize fight.
The Spotted Dog
Burke's first fight was when he was 18. Back then there wasn't any 12 round rule, they fought until the sun set. at the end of the fight, Burke proved he was just as good a fighter as any other hearing prize fighter in Britain.
The First Fight
Over the next ten years Burke continued to prize fight and won nearly every fight he was challenged to. He became an extremely well known fighter in Britain, he was moving up the ladder and approaching the championship fight.
On May 30th, 1833 Burke fought for the Heavy Weight Championship title against Irish fighter Simon Byrne. the fight lasted over three hours and ended in the tenth round with Burke knocking out Byrne. Byrne died three days later, but Burke was not convicted and freed.

Burke later came to America and is said to have brought prize fighting to America. In 1845, Burke died from Tuberculosis at the age of 36. in 1966, he was inducted into the Boxing Hall Of Fame. Burke lived a successful life and showed that being deaf is not a detriment and didn't hold him back.
