Why don't we make a list of rules that he has to follow?
Nobles Figure Out What To Do
I know just the way.
Now that the Magna Carta is finished, we need to find a way to make King John sign.
King John was the ruler during this time. All the other kings before him used their powers responsibly and he abused them. He demanded his land back from France and raised taxes to be able to pay for his personal needs.
Nobles Force King John To Sign
...but I'll die...
King John, you will sign or us, nobles will not defend you in battle anymore!
The nobles eventually met to discuss King John's powers and the ways he has been using them. They decided they needed to do something about it. No one enjoyed the powers except for King John. They did not want more rulers like him in the future so they decided to limit the powers of the king.
King John Signs The Magna Carta
I really don't want to do this!
They eventually decided to make the document called the Magna Carta. They made sure that on this document, the king did not have as much power as they did now. They still had to figure out how to make him sign. They eventually decided there was no way he would sign it willingly so they had to force him.
What Magna Carta Does For People
Magna Carta 1) Nobles must approve of taxes before the king taxes the people 2) People will be allowed to a Trial By Jury 3) There will be a parliament
The nobles met with King John and told him that if he did not sign, that they would not protect him and defend him anymore. Without their help, he was sure to die. He was forced to agree if he wanted to stay alive.
King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215 AD. It made sure that the king did not have as much power. It was originally just for the nobles but soon spread to every citizen.
Some of the things that the Magna Carta did was limit the power of the king. It said that the nobles had to approve of every tax before the king taxed the people. People were allowed to a trial by jury and there was a parliament which is a representative assembly. It set forth basic rights for all people and eventually led to the end of feudalism in Europe.
