Oh hi there, my name is Sarah and I'm going to help you learn about how the study of Psychology came to be.
Psychology has a long past but a short history. You see psychology was branched off of Physiology and it is the study of knowledge reality and human nature
Psyche means the mind or soul and Logos means the study of. There are also different types of behavior in psychology such as, Overt which is observable -eating, sleeping, watching t.v, there is also Covert which is more internal, like daydreaming or thinking.
Modern scientific psychology is 100 years old. Aristotle claimed that it was "the search for understanding".
Now let's look at the historical figures that helped discover the study of psychology
Wundt Opened the Institute for Experimental Psychology at the University of Leipzig in Germany in 1879. In this laboratory, they studied reaction times, and attention. They would then take these results and study them in order to get an underlining structure.
This is Wilhelm Wundt. Wundt believed that the mind and its behaviors can be studied scientifically. He came up with the idea of introspection which is to look inside yourself to understand what is going on. He thought that our brains are made of tiny elements that could be broken down and studied.
This is William James, the first person to bring psychology to the United States. His main focus was on how the mid worked and adapted, he called this functionalism. He also used Pragmatism which means if an idea works it's valid. He studied at Harvard and his main interest in psychology sprouted from Wundt. He taught psychology and would later write a book about the principle of psychology. In his book, he included functionalism, consciousness, sleep, emotion, and attention.
