Storyboard Text

  • Odysseus had arrived at Polyphemus's island.
  • '“We are Achaians coming from Troy, beaten off our true course by winds from every direction across the great gulf of the open sea, making for home, by the wrong way, on the wrong courses. So we have come. So it has pleased Zeus to arrange it.”’ (9.259-262)
  • Polyphemus arrives and ignores greek customs, he consumes some of Odysseus's men.
  • '"The Cyclopes do not concern themselves over Zeus of the aegis, nor any of the rest of the blessed gods, since we are far better than they […]."' (9.273-287)
  • ‘“Nohbdy is my name. My father and mother call me Nohbdy, as do all the others who are my companions.”’ (9.366-367)
  • Odysseus tricks the Cyclops into becoming drunk. Telling him that his name is "Nohbdy".
  • "They held the sharpened olivewood stake, and thrust it into his eye, while I threw my weight on the end, and twisted it round and round, as a man bores the timbers of a ship with a drill that others twirl lower down with a strap held at both ends, and so keep the drill continuously moving. We took the red-hot stake and twisted it round and round like that in his eye, and the blood poured out despite the heat." (9.381-388)
  • Odysseus and his crew blind Polyphemus. Polyphemus says that "Nohbdy" is hurting him which tricks the other Cyclops.
  • Odysseus and his crew hide under Polyphemus's sheep and sneak out.
  • "When it was time to let them out of pasture, the Cyclops ran his hands over their backs but did not notice the men underneath." (9.?-?)
  • Odysseus gloats and tells his real name. Polyphemus curses Odysseus for the rest of his journey
  • ‘“...If truly I am your son, and you acknowledge yourself as my father, grant that Odysseus, sacker of cities, son of Laertes, who makes his home in Ithaka, may never reach that home; but if it is decided that he shall see his own people, and come home to his strong-founded house and to his own country, let him come late, in bad case, with the loss of all his companions, in someone else’s ship, and find troubles in his household.” ‘So he spoke in prayer, and the dark-haired god heard him.’ (9.528-536)
