  • Hello Dr. Cogswell! I'm excited for this new adventure!
  • Thank you Mr. Gallaudet for agreeing to get one of the best teachers from Paris, Mr. Clec. 
  • Thomas Gallaudet Goes to France to Meet Laurent Clerc
  • .Thank you so much Mr. Clerc. You have so much to offer to the deaf community in America.
  • No problem. I will begin teaching you Sign Language on the way to America
  • Laurent Clarc Teaches Thomas Gallaudet Sign Language
  • Thank you and you are doing very well learning English!
  • Thomas you are starting to get the hang of sign language!
  • In 1817, Thomas Gallaudet met Thomas Cogswell and his daughter Alice. Alice was deaf and had no way to really communicate. Gallaudet saw that this was a problem for all deaf people in America. He was about to go on a journey to France where he would meet Laurent Clark.
  • Laurent Clerc Meets Alice
  • Is this the man Mr. Laurent Clerc who is going to help me?
  • Laurent Clerc was deaf himself, he was an educator in Paris. He agreed to go to America and teach Deaf children in America. Thomas Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc met in Paris and then traveled to America, where their work would begin. 
  • Laurent Clerc Teaches Alice
  • I'm going to teach Alice how to write!
  • Their voyage back was 55 days long. Laurent Clerc taught Thomas Gallaudet French Sign Language and Galladuet taught Clerc English.
  • America's School for the Deaf was Created
  • Yes Mr. Laurent Clerc! Can you believe all of our hard work payed off?
  • The day Laurent Clerc got to America he met Alice. She was all by herself and away from all of the other kids who were hearing. Laurent Clerc wanted to help her communicate with everyone.
  • Clerc helped Alice communicate by writing with a stick in the dirt. She quickly caught on. This helped him later teach other death students, and co-found the America's School for the Deaf.
  • Yes, this is the man that is going to help me!
  • On April 15, 1817 in Hartford, Connecticut America's School for the Deaf opened. Laurent Clerc's and Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet's hard work and dedication had officially payed off!
  • Mr. Thomas Gallaudet this is it! This is the opening day of the school we have worked so hard for!
