  • I wish I had the boy
  • Page 44 stated,  “I wish I had the boy,” the old man said aloud." The man was missing the boy but continued to keep going for him.
  • Speech 
  •  You better be fearless and confident yourself, old man
  • On page 83 it sated “ You better be fearless and confident yourself, old man,” he said. He was trying to encourage himself to keep going by telling himself things to boost his self-esteem.
  • Thought
  • According to Jared  Diamond, "They sat on the Terrace and many of the fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry" (page 10). The old man is not being affected by the men talking about him this way.  
  • That old man is so unlucky hahaha
  • He hasn't even caught a fish in 84 days ! haha
  • Effect on others.
  • Page 51 stated,  “Fish,” he said softly, aloud, “I’ll stay with you until I am dead.”  The old man is continuing to stay with the fish to catch him no matter what.
  • Actions
  • Page 9 stated, "Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated. " The old man's eyes were the only thing about him that looked young and were good.
