Tom had a wife who was even more miserly than him that they had cheated on each other. Whatever had happened between Tom and his wife had set many conflicts betwen them about what had been thought to be common property.
One day when Tom was out he decided to visit a distant part of the neighborhood when he was on his way home he decided to take a shortcut back to his house through the swamp. While Tom was walking through the woods his staff had hit something hard so he decided to check what it was and it was a skull then a voice told Tom not to touch it. And when Tom looked up he saw a black man. And the black man had made Tom a bargain.
After Tom told his wife what he had done she got mad and stormed off and set for the old Indian fort and when she went back home she reserved and sullen. And she told Tom about a black man which she met at twilight, hewing at a root of a tall tree. And she described the black man as being sulky, however, and wouldn't come to terms about a propitiatory offering.
