The Narrator lives with an old man, who has a deformed eye. And the eye haunts the narrator. "He had the eye of a vulture --a pale blue, with a film over it."
The narrator snuck into his room for 8 nights, to try to kill the old man. "I moved in slowly very, very slowly, so that I might not disturb the old man's sleep."
On the 8 night, the narrator grabbed the old man out of his bed and suffocated the old man until he was dead. "In an instant, I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him."
When the narrator was finished getting rid of the body, there was a knock on the door, it was the officers. "There entered three men, who introduced themselves, with perfect suavity, as officers of the police."
The narrator starts to feel guilty and keeps hearing the old man's heartbeat so, he tells the officers that he killed the old man. "I admit the deed! --tear up the planks! here, hear! --it is the beating of his hideous heart!"
The narrator cuts the old man's body, to hide all of the evidence. "First of all, I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms and the legs."
