Storyboard Text

  • Good Morning. My name is Ms.Obie, and today's discussion will be about antibiotic and pesticide resistance.
  • How does antibiotic/pesticide resistance develop?
  • Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria changes in some way that reduces or eliminates the effectiveness of drugs, chemicals, or other agents designed to prevent infections.
  • Pesticide resistance describes the decreased susceptibility of a pest population to a pesticide that was previously effective at controlling the pest.
  • An example of pesticide resistance are the studies in America that have shown that fruit flies that infest orange groves we becoming resistant to malathion.
  • What are some examples of such resistance?
  • An example of antibiotic resistance includes methicllin-resistant staphylococcus aureus.
  • Why is making "stronger" antibiotics/pesticides a problem when it comes to resistance?
  • Pesticides - If a body of water becomes contaminated with the chemicals, many fish and other animals may die and get sick. This can throw the whole ecosystem off balance.
  • Every time a person takes antibiotics, sensitive bacteria are killed but resistant bacteria may grow and multiply.
  • A few solutions for pesticide resistance are the following: Avoid Tank Mixes Avoid Persistent Chemical
  • A few solutions for antibiotic resistance are the following: Practice Antibiotic Stewardship Stop Antibiotic Use on the Farm
  • What solutions have been offered to combat resistance?
  • What is the most likely outcome if we continue making stronger & stronger antibiotics/pesticides?
  • If pesticides continues to get stronger, it will risk the health of any person that they come across.
  • If antibiotics continue to get stronger, they will not get weaker; they will become drug-resistant.
