Nick Pearson is under a witness protection program because of his dad's job. He had moved to his fourth new school, Stepton High, and he isn't fond of it already. On his first day, he encounters his first problem: A bully.
"First period gym. The worst class scheduling scenario ever"..."I was hating Stepton High already."
Nick's student guide, Eli is a journalist. He writes the school paper, 'The Rebel Yell.' Nick thinks that he is weird at first, but they quickly make friends as Nick realizes that his sister is the girl from his gym period.
"Reya is trouble in a training bra."
"Trouble in a training bra is your sister?"
Nick gets home from his first day of school. His mother is tired of switching locations because of his father's mistakes. They are always arguing when they are together in the house.
"We have to check in once a week like little kids at camp. Are you satisfied?"
I felt like something was missing until you started nagging."
Nick's dad is a very suspicious person. Nick wants to know what he does, so he tracks him to find out what he is doing. At first he thinks that he is robbing city hall but as it turns out, he is running something that involves Eli.
Nick immediately calls Eli and they meet up at a small cafe to talk about what he has to do with his father's scheme and Eli's paper about 'Whispertown.'
"Tell me why you want to know?
"Eli what's so secretive about Whispertown?"
Nick has a lot on his mind with all that is going on. His godfather is a hitman, but he loves Nick. He calls with a disposable phone and talks with him about his problems.
