  • True!--nervous--very,very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? How, then, am I mad? Hearken! and observe how healthily-- how calmly I can tell you the whole story.
  • I love the old man. He's always been kind. But I can't stand looking at that vulture eye. Every time I look at it my blood runs could. I've gradually thought about this plan. But I have decided to take the man's life.
  • Every night for 7 days. I opened the door just a crack, at midnight. And watched the old man sleep.
  • He screamed once. Only once. I put the mattress over him. That's right. I suffocated the old man. He was dead-stone dead.
  • Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
  • It's that old man's heart beat. It's alright don't panic. Pretend you don't hear it. Why is it getting louder and louder and louder! My head aches! Oh no! Their going to kill me!
  • The police asked me questions. "Where were you when he died?"
  • Villains! dissemble no more! I admit the deed! --tear up the planks! here, here!--It is the beating of his hideous heart!
