Chapter 3 Summary

Storyboard Text

  • "All day I've been working with Simon. No one else. They're off bathing, or eating, or playing." (pg 50)
  • After Jack finishes hunting, Ralph starts complaining to him about how no one is helping him and Simon build the huts,
  • "You wouldn't care to help with the shelters, I suppose?" (pg 51)
  • Jack and Ralph start to argue. Ralph thinks that the hunters use the excuse to go hunting so they don't have to do the hard work.
  • "We want meat-" (pg 51)
  • "All the warm salt water of the bathing pool and the shouting and splashing and laughing were only just sufficient to bring them together again." (pg55)
  • After arguing, the boys decided to go for a swim together.
  • "...Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage. passed them back to the endless, outstretched hands." (pg 56)
  • Simon wanders through the jungle alone. He sees some of the littluns and helps them reach some fruit.
  • "No one else. They're off bathing, or eating, or playing." (pg 50)
  • While Ralph and Simon are building the huts, everyone else is in the water playing.
  • With zero help from the other boy, Ralph and SImon are struggling trying to build shelters.
  • "Two shelters were in position, but shaky. This one was a ruin." (pg 50)
