This story takes place in late summer, on a tree-lined street called Maple Street. Children are laughing and enjoying the sun, while Steve Brand polishes his car.
A streak of light flashes across the sky and knocks out all of the power on Maple Street. Tommy, a young boy, shares a story from a comic book that there are monsters in the neighborhood that are disguised as humans.
No it's not!! It's Rob!!
No, Karen! Just go into a corner and CALM DOWN!!
All of a sudden, Les Goodman's car started all by itself. Everyone starts accusing Les Goodman of being the "Monster"
No dip DERYLL!
Charlie, a neighbor, thinks that a figure walking down the road in the "Monster" and he shoots at the figure. Turns out, the figure was Pete Van Horn.
Soon, the power comes back on into random houses. Maple Street is chaos because of all the accusations flying around. Everyone is blaming another neighbor.
No it isn't!!!
The monsters from outer space watch as Maple Street goes into chaos. The civilians accuse without proof, and friendships slowly tear apart. Words and actions can have just as bad an effect on someone as a bullet. Derryl was right...These people ARE the real monsters.
But THEY'RE the real monsters!!
They think that they have a monster in the neighborhood...
