Frederick Douglass is a slave. He does not know his own age. He never gets to see his mother and doesn't know his dad. It's like he's an orphan whose parents are a world away. He is working at a plantation in Maryland in 1833.
One day he is working and falls down and can't get up. He finally gets up! Covey is very rude and does not care that Douglass is hurt. Covey threatens to beat him if he doesn't work. He has to work no matter what, even in the pouring rain.
Every day Covey is being meaner and meaner, like when Frederick sits down for 1 minute, he gets in trouble. Covey hides in the fields to see if the slaves are doing their job. Frederick is working and then falls again. Then Covey is like, “ Ha ha you aren't doing your work,” and hits Frederick!
But Frederick is done getting hit for no reason! Covey hits Frederick in the face. So Frederick puts his hand up to block the club. Covey is very surprised when Frederick tries to block the club. Frederick is thinking if he should just let Covey hit him or if he should fight. He decides to do something!
Covey says, “What are you doing?” Frederick says, “I am done getting hit!” They then start fighting. Frederick is stronger. He punches Covey in the face. Covey calls for help. The other people don't want to help because they are scared.
In the end, Covey is the loser and Frederick is the winner. Frederick is never whipped by Covey again. They fight many times in the future and Frederick wins every time. Until Frederick leaves, Covey is scared of Frederick!
