Arthur, Henry's older brother, had all the pressure on him, because he was supposed to inherit the crown.
Sadly, Arthur died at the age of 15, and 10 year old Henry was now supposed to inherit the crown.
When Henry was 17, he married Catherine of Aragon, who was his brother's wife.
Henry's father wanted to keep their partnership with Spain, and therefore had Henry marry the widow.
Catherine couldn't seem to give Henry boys that lived past infancy. Henry wanted to find a way to divorce Catherine so that he could find another wife that could give him a boy.
I need an heir to my throne! You keep giving me no good girls!
Henry did some research and found evidence in the bible that proved Catherine was never rightfully married to him, and that there marriage was never valid. So, he gave his letter to a messenger to give to the Pope asking for permission for Catherine to be annulled.
The messenger took the Pope Henry's letter, and the Pope read it. Despite all of the evidence Henry provided from the Bible for Catherine's annulment, the Pope still said...
Since the Pope said no, Henry decided to follow Luther and make his own Church. He split from the Catholic Church to make his Church called the Anglican Church or the Church of England. This Church was almost the exact same as the Catholic Church, except the King was the head instead of the Pope.
Since Henry was now the ruler of the church, many people were not okay with this and came after him. Henry liked being the head, because he got to make his own choices without someone "vetoing" them.
