  • John Jay was trying to avoid war and bring peace. He was sending messages to convince the British to pull back their troops.

  • The British ignored most of his messages and continued to send troops. Jay realized war was inevitable after trying to stop it for years when the British sent their strongest military force to New York.

  • Jay punished people for betraying America for the British. He would hang them in public for betraying America.

  • Jay organized a spy ring to discover Britain's movements and plans. They would sneak into the British army and report back to Jay what they discovered.
  • John Jay and his wife set sail for Spain to discuss a peace treaty to stop the war with Britain. They were ignored and treated rudely during their two years in Spain.

  • When the economy was failing and the government was being destroyed, New York finally decided to ratify the new Constitution after Jay spent long hours convincing the New York legislature to ratify it.
