  • For what had I have to fear
  • With a loud yell, He threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. In an instant, i dragged him to the floor and pulled the heavy bed over him.

  • A shriek had been heard by a neighbor during the night suspicion of foul play had been aroused
  • He then took three planks from the flooring of the chamber and deposited all between the scantlings.

  • It was four o'clock-still dark as midnight. As the bell sounded the hour, there came knocking at the street door.

  • Men arrived and introduced themselves as officers. They were here to investigate a shriek heard by a neighbor. I let them in, for what did I have to fear.
