Texas was annexed into the US in 1845. However, the Mexican government did not want to give up their land.
Polk sent Americans into Mexico to provoke war with the Mexicans. General Taylor led them to the Rio Grande River to claim the land east of the river.
When the Mexicans shot at the Americans, Polk sent for the order for war to Congress. The Mexican-American War officially began.
The Mexicans and US fought for two years (1846-1848).
In 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ends the war and seals American victory. Mexico agrees to recognize the US annexation of Texas.
To cover the debts Mexico owed to the US, Mexico gave the territories of California and New Mexico to the US for $15 million.
