Paper Towns By: John Green Gabrielle Parker Progress Report #3: Theme
Theme Development #1
"I'm a big believer in random capitalization. The rules of capitalization are so unfair to words in the middle." (1.3.7) Margo Spiegelman, grammar wise, enjoys doing what she wants. That is a part of her that is unique to her personality. This quote has to do with her identity because she wants to be distinct in her own way and she expresses that by twisting the rules of grammar.
Theme Development #2
"I wanted Margo's disappearance to change me; but it hadn't, not really." (2.10.36) Quentin describes how he wants to change and develop to the people around him. He is disappointed that he has stayed true to his own personality and that he hasn't evolved into a new person, given the teens he is spending time with.
Theme Development #3
"Stop thinking Ben should be you, and he needs to stop thinking you should be him, and y'all just chill the hell out." (2.14.46) Radar explains that everyone needs to stay true to themselves and that you don't need to conform to the crowd. He also tells that everyone is their own person and no person is the same. You need to accept people for who they are and treat them no different.
Prediction: In my opinion, in the end I believe all of the characters will realize who they really are and they will not change for anyone. They will be who they want to be and not listen to what anyone else says. Yes, they have their differences but in the end it doesn't really matter to anyone else of who you are.
