Storyboard Text

  • Edward the Confessor, the childless king of England, promised William the throne. The king's brother in law, Harold Godwin, swore to support him.
  • William was the duke of Normandy, and had conquered Brittany and Maine. He was also a relative of Edward, and never spoke English.
  • William, you can have the throne after I die.
  • Yes, thank you sir!
  • I swear to support your claim!
  • In 1066, Edward died. Harold kept the throne for himself. He was the strongest English lord, so the Wittan, a council of lords, supported him.
  • William wasn't happy, so he assembled a fleet and army in Normandy to take back the throne.
  • All mine now!
  • William's army was delayed for several weeks due to unrelenting north winds.
  • Meanwhile, the Norwegian army attacked England from the North Sea. Harold had to fight William immediately after defeating the Norwegians.
  • WHY!!!!!!
  • On October 14, 1066, Harold and William's armies clashed in the Battle of Hastings.
  • Harold's army had to march for hundreds of miles after fighting the Norwegians, contrasting to William's army that marched for about 4 miles.
  • I'm so tired...
  • Attack!
  • Without anyone left to challenge him, William became first Norman (from Normandy) King of England.
  • Harold was shot in the eye and was killed, along with his two brothers.
  • I won!
  • William was crowned king on Christmas.
  • He used revolts as an excuse to confiscate land from the Anglo-Saxon nobles, replacing them with the Norman nobles.
