Storyboard Text

  • Hi, I'm Charlotte and this is my friend John. We are slaves, we work in cotton fields pulling cotton and harvesting other cash crops.
  • Society/Social
  • Work is often very hard and we get payed little to nothing. Sometimes we don't know where we will end up since the slave trade continues.
  • Geographic Features, Society/Social
  • Once a week we are allowed to go to church. We read the gospel and we sing spiritual songs.
  • Spiritual songs are basically, spiritual folk for people like us. Going to church gives us hope that eventually we will be free.
  • Geographic Features
  • Down here in Louisiana we have very fertile soil, warm climate and substantial length growing season.
  • With all these factors, we are constantly working. We produce crops fast and cheap.
  • Economy
  • With all the mass production of crops, the amount of slaves working went from 7 hundred-thousand, to 4 million.
  • We were sold by our master to another master. This master grows cotton instead of rice.
  • Economy
  • Most slave owners often buy and sell slaves for an additional source of income.
  • Economy, Political/Cultural
  • We have been transfered yet again. Our owner said we will now be working in a factory, helping with the production of cotton.
  • There is this machine called the cotton gin, it makes cotton more profitable and it makes it faster unlike anything I've ever seen.
