Frederick Douglass was a slave who went through extremely hard times. When Douglass moved in with the aulds it was a totally different lifestyle. Douglass was excited for a new beginning and when he arrived he automatically noticed the kind faces and nice, fancy house of the Aulds. The Aulds had a son named Thomas that is who Douglass was to look after but Douglass mostly did chores around the house. One day Mrs.Auld asked Douglass if he knew how to read and of course his answer was no, this is because slaves weren’t allowed to learn. So Mrs.Auld began to teach him to read and write the A..B..C’s. After a few days Mr.Auld walked in and was absolutely furious Mr.Auld forbid Douglass from learning because it could be dangerous. After that incident Mrs.Auld was no longer kind to him, she would yell at him and even hit him. Douglass grew to be defiant and did not like the way the Aulds would treat him, he was desperate to learn. Douglass dreamed about reading and wished he could be free like the white children. Eventually Mr.Auld had enough of Douglass acting out. Soon Douglass was going to be sent to Mr.Covey’s plantation, Covey is the slave breaker for defiant slaves.
When Douglass moved in with Covey he was nervous and Covey was constantly watching over Douglass like a hawk. Douglass thinks about how he felt when he was young and was told he was not allowed to go to school or learn how to read and write. Douglass wanted to escape from slavery because he was whipped and treated very poorly. One night Douglass decided he was going to escape Mr.Covey’s plantation and get to maryland. So he quietly got past the boundaries and went into the woods. Douglass had been walking for hours and it was nearly morning when he ran upuan Sandy Jenkens, who gave Douglass a majical root that would protect him and give him courage to think himself as free. Douglass took the root with a grain of salt and went back to the plantation where Covey was waiting for him.
When Douglass got home he was expecting a beating but surprisingly Mr.Covey was very calm. That same afternoon Frederick Douglass was cleaning the barn when all of a sudden Covey came into the barn and tried to attack Douglass with all the courage inside of him he kicked and he punched and he beat up covey. Douglass knew it was from the root giving him courage to stand up for himself. When Douglass was close to killing covey he let him go and made sure he knew how Douglass was to be treated.
