Richard T. James was the inventor of the slinky. Even tho the slinky was supposed to be a spring on ships to stabilize sensitive instruments aboard in rough seas, it turned into something famous and spread worldwide. In 1943 James was a naval mechanical engineer stationed at a shipyard in Philadelphia, designing springs to hold instruments on a ship when he accidentally hit one and watched in amazed as it fell down the stairs
In 1943 Richard T. James and his wife opened up a toy store called Gimbles Department Store, in Philidelphia to current Hollidaysburg PA.

The slinky became a worldwide invention for many kids and grown-ups. Over 300 million Slinkys have been sold between 1945 and 2005. The original slinky is still the bestseller The slinky even taught people to learn about potential energy and gravity effects.
