  • 1492 Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer for Spain. Landed in the Americas. He was looking for a faster and safer route to Asia.
  •  In 1519, Pineda set out to explore and map the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. He became the first European to observe the Texas coast. Some of his men were arrested and he never finished the exploration.
  • 1519, Hernan Cortes went to present day Mexico and met the Aztecs. The Aztecs viewed Cortes and his men as gods. Cortes and the Spanish overthrew the Aztecs with help of Aztec enemies, and they used the area as base. Along with that, they possessed the Aztecs riches.
  • In 1528, Cabeza de Vaca got shipwrecked on Galvaston. The Karankawa's took them in and made sure they were safe. 1528-1536, Cabeza de Vaca Traveled from tribe to tribe across Texas. When he arrived in Mexico, he told tales of the city of gold.
  • Coronado and 1000 other men went in search for the fabled city of gold in 1540.  They never found it, but they did find the Grand Canyon, Pacific Ocean, and explored present day Kansas. After that, the Spanish took no interest in Texas until another country took interest in 1684. 
  •  In 1685, La Salle shipwrecked and landed on Matagorda Bay where he built Fort st Louis. He later ran out of supplies, and most of his men died of hunger, disease, and the Karankawas killing them. La Salle later was killed in 1687 by a Canadian soldier.
