Salome Urena was born on October 21, 1850 in Santa Domingo
Her father, Nicholas Urena was a well known writer. He taught his daughter the basics of French and Spanish. This fueled Salome's love of writing. This led to her becoming a poet.
When Salome Urena was 17 she had became a published poet. With Hermania as her pen name which was unique because most females had to take on a male pen name.
In her poems she wrote about; feminism,multiculturalism,and nature. Her perspective on things,Patriotism for her country and nature were important factors in her poems.
Her mother,Gregoria Diaz influenced her to become an educator. She was told about the learning process and the importance of education as a woman due to women not having a formal education.
In 1881 Salome Urena founded the first institution for better education for Women. This gave many women the opportunity to receive a good and acquirable education. This was an important achievement for Salome Urena and Women in Latin America.
