  • Salome Urena was born on October 21, 1850 in Santa Domingo
  • Her father, Nicholas Urena was a well known writer. He taught his daughter the basics of French and Spanish. This fueled Salome's love of writing. This led to her becoming a poet.
  • When Salome Urena was 17 she had became a published  poet. With Hermania as her pen name which was unique because most females had to take on a male pen name.

  • In her poems she wrote about; feminism,multiculturalism,and nature. Her perspective on things,Patriotism for her country and nature were important factors in her poems.
  • Her mother,Gregoria Diaz influenced her to become an educator. She was told about the learning process and the importance of education as a woman due to women not having a formal education.
  • In 1881 Salome Urena founded the first institution for better education for Women. This gave many women the opportunity to receive a good and acquirable education. This was an important achievement for Salome Urena and Women in Latin America.
