  • Langston Hughes  was on February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. He was born at the time of segregation. Langston's parents sseperated when he was little. So he lived with his maternal grandmother.
  • Popularity Takes Place
  • Langston grew up many different places.  When Langston was 12 his grandmother died.  So he lived with his mom and stepdad in Lincoln, Illinois.
  • In 1923 Hughes joined the crew of a  boat for Africa. He wrote stories and poems and sent the home to be published.  
  • Langston decided to move back to New York and make a living as a writer on his own. He lived in Harlem, New York and became part of The Harlem Renaissance.
  • Hughes championed other African American artists too. William Still was a African American composer.
  • On May 22, 1967 Langston Hughes died from cancer. His ashes were put on the entrance of Arthur Schomburg  Center to remember how great and awesome he was.
