We meet the highwayman. There is a description about the scenery and his appearance. He is riding to an old inn.
The highwayman comes to see Bess, the landlord's daughter, because they are in love. He tells her that he will return at midnight. An ostler named Tim listens and tells King George where the highwayman will be.
King George's men came to the inn and tie up Bess. They put a musket under her breast.
The highwayman is returning, so Bess shoots herself to warn him of the trap. The highwayman flees back to the west at the sound of the gunshot.
When the highwayman finds out that Bess is dead, he flies into a rage and goes back to the Inn screaming curses. He gets shot down and killed by the King's men.
The ghosts of the highwayman and Bess still meet every midnight, at the Inn.
