Storyboard Text

  • Overproduction
  • Variation
  • Environment
  • Each flamingo lays one egg, so there are more eggs laid than eggs that survived.
  • Struggle
  • There are variations in flamingos, long and short legs. The environment selects for and against one variation.
  • Selection
  • They live in sandy and large alkaline lakes. The flamingos need long legs so they can survive in the water.
  • Differential Reproduction
  • The flamingos are constantly in the water so it's a struggle for short-legged flamingos because they can drown.
  • Nature selects FOR the long-legged flamingos because they can stand on the water which means they can get their food a lot easier, and therefore they are more likely to survive.
  • Over the course of many years, evolution and natural selection come together and form a population of just long-legged flamingos. There are only a few short-legged flamingos.
