The Mali Empire had a king named Mansa Muda. Mansa doubled the land of Mali during his reign. He was very wealthy. He is know to be the richest person in the world.
They built many universities and library's and it became a meeting point for artists and such from both Islamic and Europeans.
Cities of Mali became very important trading centers for not just the Mali Empire, but the whole of West Africa.
Since king Musa had a lot of gold, it wasn't as valuable. So, salt is a life necessity, usually people would trade gold for salt.
Will you trade me that gold for a basket of salt?
The Mali Empire had many different cultural groups and languages. Some of the cultures were Dogon and Bambara.
