  • The First Punic War was fought over control of Corsica and Sicily.
  • The Romans also had interest in Sicily which caused conflict between Carthage and Rome.
  • Rome sided with messina and gained an alliance with Syracuse and attacked Carthage.
  • The Romans rebuilt their fleet and won their first naval battle at mylae. roman was able to gain control of corsica.
  • The Carthaginians were prepared to surrender, but the Roman's terms were too harsh so Carthage attacked with a new army and elephants.
  • rome had complete control of the sea, a fleet of 200 ships. a year later, Carthage surrendered, giving the romans sicily and the lapari islands.
