The First Punic War was fought over control of Corsica and Sicily.
The Romans also had interest in Sicily which caused conflict between Carthage and Rome.
Rome sided with messina and gained an alliance with Syracuse and attacked Carthage.
The Romans rebuilt their fleet and won their first naval battle at mylae. roman was able to gain control of corsica.
The Carthaginians were prepared to surrender, but the Roman's terms were too harsh so Carthage attacked with a new army and elephants.
rome had complete control of the sea, a fleet of 200 ships. a year later, Carthage surrendered, giving the romans sicily and the lapari islands.
