  • My life has been really difficult.

  • "And life for me ain't been no crystal stair"
  • The literal and figurative meanings are a mother's lesson to her son.
  • Atittude
  • But I always keep going throughout the hard times.
  • The mother explains her hardships to her son, and says that she never gives up. Additionally, her son should also never give up. 
  • Shift
  • And no matter how hard it gets, you can always continue on.
  • "And life for me ain't been no crystal stair" (x2). Metaphor, because it is a direct comparison between life and an easy route. 
  • Theme 
  • Just remember son, to never give up. 
  • The tone of the poem is serious, passionate, and persevering. 
  • There is a shift from sadness to optimistic. She talks about how life is difficult, and how hard it is sometimes, but it turns it around and says that she just keeps going. 
  • Perseverance: That life is hard, and can always get worse, but you just have to push through and keep going, no matter what.
