During king James I reign the catholics were unhappy with his way of ruling because they were forced to become protestants and go to there churches or they would get a big fine.
Robert Catesby and three other men plotted to kill King James but they needed someone who could use and plant gunpowder underneath the Houses of Parliament.
They recruited Guy Fawkes who was also a Catholic and was annoyed with King James as well so he was recruited and told them they would need at least 20 barrels of gunpowder to break through the Houses of Parliament's foundation. They paid the next door neighbour to let them smuggle the barrels through there celler.
To help with there plan they told another 3 people about it but one of them had a friend that worked in the Houses of Parliament and os wrote a letter to him telling to stay away. Feeling suspicious he took the letter to the king who ordered his that night to search the castle for any trouble that was lurking.
The guards searched the building and also searched the cellars of the near buildings and underneath one of them they heard something and asked who was their Guy replied with a false name"John Johnson" but he Knew the game was up because they had surely seen the barrels of powder and the match in his hand.
All of the plotters were put on trial and were arrested for treason. They were Hung, Drawn and Quartered but since the government didn't want people to forget what had happened the said that every year on november 5th there would be a celebration were there would be an effigy (model of Guy Fawkes) burned on a bonfire accompanied with colourful fireworks.
