After the battle of New York, the patriots used spies to know all of the British plans. Haym Salomon was used to spy on the british. Nathan Hale was another spy that stole information from the british and was later hanged for his crimes.
In 1776 on Christmas night, George Washington and his men captured hundreds of redcoats. This was perfect timing because the British had drunk a lot the night before. They would have never suspected the patriots would attack on a holiday. This was known as the Battle of Trenton.

The Battle of Saratoga was the best victory for the patriots. John Burgoyne(a british general) wanted to separate New england from everything else. They were not successful thought because the colonists made it hard for the british to get through. Burgoyne had to surrender on October 17.
In winter of 1777 and 1778, George washington's soldiers were dying of starvation and the cold. They had barely any food or shelter and some didn't even have clothes so they froze to death. 2,000 soldiers died.
