  • In 1854, Douglas wanted to divide the land west of Iowa and Missouri into two territories, Nebraska and Kansas. He wanted that because he knew that it would strengthen his party and unify the nation.
  • Douglas believed that popular sovereignty is the most fair and democratic way to organize the new state government. Popular sovereignty is the system in which the residents vote to decide an issue, at this time is slavery.
  • I want revenge and will get it. Now lets go kill some proslavery followers.
  •  On January 23, 1854, Douglas passed a bill to congress to divide the territories into Kansas in the south and Nebraska in the north. . The Kansas Nebraska Act a law, that enacted in 1854, that established the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and gave their residents the right to decide whether to allow slavery.
  • " The Sack Of Lawrence", on May 21, 1856, a proslavery posse of 800 armed men swept into Lawrence to carry out the grand jury's will. The posse burned down the antislavery headquarters, destroyed two newspapers' printing presses, and looted many houses and stores,
  • John Brown, a fiery idealist who believed that god had called on him to fight slavery. On May 24th, he and his followers pulled five men from their beds in proslavery settlement of Pottawatomie creek, hacked their hands, and stabbed them with broadsword. This attack is known as the " Pottawatomie Massacre" this led to the cries for revenge.
