The conflict in this play is witchcraft. Dishonesty plays a big role, because the whole accusing because the girls didn't say the truth about what they did in the forest. As said by Abigail, " Now look you. All of you. we danced. And tituba conjured Ruth Putnman's dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this.Let either of you breath a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I....." In this quote, Abigial is threatining the girls and telling them that if they say a word she'll hurt them. She doesn't want them to say the truth becuase she know s what they did was wrong and will go in troubles.
A character that contributes to the conflict is John Proctor. He's the reason why Abigail is accusing people and he's the reason why she accused his wife. She mad it clear that she won't stop until she gets him. As said by Abigail " I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men! And now you bid me tear the light out of my eyes? I will not, I cannot! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!." This quote shows what her motivations are and won't stop until she gets John Proctor.
One major complication that contributes to the conflict is when Abigail and Mercy Lewis disappeared. Because people are starting to question the court and if what their doing is right. Like said by Revrend Parris " confession surely damns the others in the public eye, and none may doubt more that they are all linked to Hell." (530). The idea that the girls ran away plays a big role because it can be because they're lying, scared. Which gives the citizens a reason to rebel and over throw the court.
The witchcraft conflict has not been resolved because people are still being hanged. Especially that no one has confessed for being a witch, the court has no proof of their prisoners of being witches if the accusers ran away. Especially that the town next to them rebelled and over threw the court, decided to have to part of witchcraft. The citizens of Salem have an example to follow and look up to.
And that's all Arthur was trying to do. He was trying to expose McCarthyism, by showing what really is happening. And the only way to do that is to create something that dud the same thing as McCarthyism, which is Authority vs. Individual, the abuse of power, the dishonesty, everything that McCarthyism really stood for.
