Chandraupta, born in a powerful kingdom of magadha, gathered an army, and killed the unpopular Nanda king, and seized the throne around 321 BC. This began the Mauryan Dynasty.
Chandraguptas grandson, Asoka, assumed the throne in 269 BC and brought the empire to its strongest.
After a bloody battle at Kalinga Asoka felt sorrow for those who had perished and began studying Buddhism and the dharma.
Asoka had stone pillars with his edicts, or set of laws, on them. They guaranteed that asoka would treat his subjects fairly. Many still urged religious toleration.
Asoka had roads built to visit the far corners of India. Every nine miles he had rest houses built for travelers to refresh themselves.
Asoka sent missionaries, including some of his children, to spread buddhism. Asoka built monasteries and stupas (buddhist shrines) for other buddhists
Although Asoka's policies where noble, they failed to hold the empire together when he died in 232 BC.
