  • After a bloody battle at Kalinga Asoka felt sorrow for those who had perished and began studying Buddhism and the dharma.
  • Asoka had stone pillars with his edicts, or set of laws, on them.  They guaranteed that asoka would treat his subjects fairly.  Many still urged religious toleration.

  • Asoka had roads built to visit the far corners of India.  Every nine miles he had rest houses built for travelers to refresh themselves.
  • Asoka sent missionaries, including some of his children, to spread buddhism. Asoka built monasteries and stupas (buddhist shrines) for other buddhists
  • Although Asoka's policies where noble, they failed to hold the empire together when he died in 232 BC.
