  • The narrator begins by saying he isn't' insane, and he will prove it by telling his story calmly.
  • Rising Action
  • The narrator cares for an old man who has a cloudy blue eye. This eye disturbs the narrator.
  • Climax
  • The narrator is so obsessed with the eye that he decides to kill the old man over it.
  • Resolution
  • The narrator sneaks into the old man's room for 7 nights. On the 8th night, he finally kills him. He then stuffs his body under the floorboards.
  • The police come to question the narrator because a neighbor heard a shriek. They conclude nothing is wrong, but decide to stay awhile. The narrator begins to think he hears the old man's heart and thinks the police can hear it too, but are mocking him.
  • He is so angered by the heartbeat that he confesses to the crime, revealing the location of the body to the police.
