Storyboard Text

  • “Nothing is more certain than the indispensable necessity of government, and it is equally undeniable, that whenever and however it is instituted, the people must cede to it some of their natural rights in order to vest it with requisite powers.”
  • Federalists
  • This applies for South Carolina because they wanted federalism so they hold the election in Charleston even though the capital was in Columbia so the low country federalists would be represented.
  • This applies to South Carolina because so many upcountry colonists were anti federalists.
  • "Any system therefore which appoints a legislature, without any reservation of the rights of individuals, surrenders all power in every branch of legislation to the government."
  • Anti-Federalists
  • This affected South Carolina because big slave owners who had more taxable property still dominated politics.
  • In the compromise of 1808 we agree to equal representation. Representation will be based on the white population and the amount of taxable property.
