The battle of Yorktown was the final battle of the American Revolution. In 1781, the British surrendered. The Americans had won.
In 1775 America was a new nation, and the 13 colonies had changed to the 13 states. Each state drafted its own constitution.

In 1777 the Continental Congress wanted to join the states as a whole, but many states didn't want to give up power to a central government. They came up with the Articles of Confederation, which only loosely joined the states.

The Articles of confederation weren't going as planned. States were arguing over land and the central government didn't have the power to help. Each state also had its own money, which made trade confusing and difficult. Other countries realized that the newly formed nation was weak and took advantage.
Under the Articles of Confederation, the government made five territories into states. Those states include: Ohio, Michigan, Indiana , Illinois, and Wisconsin.
America fell into a depression and farmers suffered greatly. The government made them pay high taxes, and if they didn't pay, their farms would be taken. Daniel Shays' led a rebellion of angry farmers to attack courthouses in protest.
