Our hero John Dunbar is introduced after he got injured in battle he was in severe pain and in danger of losing his foot forever. He couldn't bare this pain for much longer, and is under a lot of stress.
Meeting with the Mentor
Our hero is called to adventure. He requests to see the frontier, and experience it before it is gone. He will ride with Timmons out West and begin his adventure, although he doesn't know what awaits.
Crossing the Threshold
Here John Dunbar briefly wants to turn back due to the fear of the unknown of the frontier. He changes his mind even though they are low on resources, and his companion Timmons also leaves. The hero believes in himself. He stays in the abandoned Fort Sedgwick and tries his best to fix it up and stay there while he waits for word from back East.
Tests, Allies, and Enemies
John Dunbar is given a way into the Sioux when he finds Stands with a Fist hurting herself. He brings her back into the Village and that is how he first makes a connection with the Sioux. She will later teach and give him advice as how to live with the Sioux, along with other important members of the Sioux, such as Kicking Bird and Wind in his Hair.
The moment John Dunbar crosses the threshold is when he is given the buffalo skin from Kicking Bird. This symbolizes a connection made between them, and opens a relationship to learn more about each other. After he is given the skin he waves goodbye and for the first time a Sioux waves back.
Throughout the heros journey, the hero must overcome many obstacles. An obstacle he is dealing with is a language barrier. He is speaking with Stands with a fist and making significant progress in forming a relationship with the Sioux. He has made an alliance with Stands With a Fist and Kicking Bird. His enemy in the Special World is Hair in the Wind.
